The other day, when I should have been studying for midterms and finishing an essay that was due the next day, I found myself lost in thought.

I was pondering life and its purpose. Is there a purpose to life?

Is there a reason that I, Samantha Dru Murphy, am on this earth today?

I’ve never done anything miraculous. I’m not well known, I don’t have thousands of Facebook friends or Instagram followers, And I don’t inspire millions of people with my words, So do I even have a purpose?

That’s when I started scrolling through my phone and stumbled across a text message from someone I swam with all through jr. high and high school.

When the text came we hadn’t seen each other in months, but she texted me to say thank you.

She told me how grateful she was for me, that our friendship had saved her, and then she said that she would never forget me, and would never forget all that I had done for her.

She said our friendship had saved her.

That’s when I realized something very important.

I don’t have to inspire millions, I don’t have to save the world, And I don’t even need to have thousands of Instagram followers. To most of the world my purpose may seem small and insignificant, but to that one person, I was able to do something amazing.

I always thought I only mattered if everyone knew my name, But I don’t think so anymore.

Because every soul is great in the sight of God. And if I only ever save one soul, well, that seems like a pretty amazing thing to me.

That is my purpose.

To love and to serve, And to do my very best.

Never underestimate your purpose in this life, Because we all have one.

There is a reason we are here. There is someone out there who is better off for knowing you, Someone whose life you changed.

And speaking as someone who has also been saved by another’s simple words and kind deeds, I urge us all to look around us and find someone who needs to be saved.

There will always be someone who is struggling, someone who is sad or lonely, someone who will be feeling lost and forgotten, and waiting to be saved, by you.

So keep going, You are needed, You are loved, And by God, you will never be forgotten.

You have a purpose.
