I always wonder what happened next!
We read in the scriptures about the rich young man who asked Jesus what he needed to do to gain eternal life. Jesus challenged him to give away all that he had to the poor and follow Him. “But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.” Matthew 19:22
So what happened next?
And the woman with the issue of blood who was healed. I just love her story of such great faith. Jesus turns to her and says, “… Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.” Luke 8:48.
Then what happened?
That great man Simon who helped our Savior in his time of dire need. “And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross.” Mark 15:21
Did he believe in Jesus? Did he know what he was doing? What happened after that?
So many stories throughout scripture that we just hear a snippet of a critical moment in time and then don’t know what happened next.
So indulge me if I share with you my version of what happened next.
The young man went home and pondered and prayed a lot and realized that he had made a grave mistake. He took all his possessions and gave them to the poor and sought out Jesus and his disciples. “Here I am Master! I have done what you said.” “Welcome,” said Jesus, enfolding him in his arms. “Well done.” And the young man went on to be a great servant in the church.
The woman was dumbfounded to be healed and danced all the way back to her home. She was able to go back to work and provide for her children. Every Sabbath, she would share with her children and her entire family, friends, and neighbors the miracle that she had received. Through her testimony, she converted hundreds to the Christ.
Simon stood silent witness as they nailed Jesus to the cross. He read the words above him, “King of the Jews.” “Is this the King?” he thought. Pure witness flowed through him and he knew, he just knew in that moment that this was the Christ. He gathered his sons, Alexander and Rufus, to him and said, “Boys, this is the Messiah that we have waited for.” Later, Simon and his sons heard the testimonies of the disciples who had seen the risen Lord. Simon’s sons went on to be great missionaries teaching the story of the Son of God whom they witnessed die and then was risen again.
I like to think that’s what happened. I like to think that was the rest of the story.
What is the rest of our story? What will our ending be? Will we prove faithful to our Savior? Will we share our burning testimonies of Him? What happens next in our story?
Time will tell.
One thing is sure–I know our stories will have great and happy endings—reunited with our Savior once again. I do so love a happy ending.
