“If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign”
Have you ever been called to do something that required courage?
Have you ever needed the Lord’s confirmation?
Have you ever felt that what God moved you to do something beyond your ability and you just needed a simple assurance that you could do it?
Such was the case with Gideon.
The Israelites again found themselves in bondage to the Midianites due to lack of obedience. The scripture says that the Lord sent to Israel a prophet that reminded them of his ability to deliver them from bondage (Judges 6:7-10).
But it would require a deliverer and this time the Lord called upon Gideon. Gideon was a mighty man of valour (Judges 6:12). In fact, his name means “mighty warrior”.
But even heroes need help sometimes
The Lord sent an angel to Gideon to invite him to rise to his call. In his doubt Gideon proclaimed “wherewith shall I save Israel?”
The Lord assured him that he would be with him and that he would indeed deliver Israel out of the Midianite bondage (Judges 6:13-16).
It is at that point that Gideon asks for the confirmation, “If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign”
Gideon courageously then gave the Lord a nudging option.
“Then Gideon said to God, If you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said, behold, I am laying a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece alone, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said.” And it was so. When he rose early next morning and squeezed the fleece, he wrung enough dew from the fleece to fill a bowl with water” (Judges 6:36-38).
Sometimes we need a fleece to affirm that we can accomplish whatever it is the Lord has asked of us.
Sometimes we just need a little message, blessing, witness, confirmation, calculated non-coincidental experiences, specific and tangible evidence from the Lord that gives us the confidence needed to act in faith and confirm in our heart and mind the power of His grace.
Look for the fleeces God is sending you to assure, comfort, and encourage you that his grace will provide the needed blessing to obey, follow, and fulfill those important errands of the Lord that come to you.
