About David Butler

David Butler never thought he would share his thoughts publicly the day he sat down 10 seconds into his very first talk in church. Now he teaches the scriptures full time and enjoys writing and speaking. He loves the scriptures fiercely–particularly the great stories of courage, faith, and deep, deliberate discipleship. Most of his days are spent with Jenny, his adorable wife, and his five spectacular renegade children. Being a dad is a treasure to him–an exhausting and exhilarating adventure. He loves, loves, loves good food and spontaneous ideas. He particularly looks forward to Christmas morning, the Fourth of July, the first day of summer, and every other day of summer. He and his wife and family currently live in Lehi, Utah, but dream of a beach house on the North Shore of Oahu. http://dailyclosertochrist.com/

…to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge… Ephesians 3:19 I think I should pray a little harder for the mothers of the world. One of them called me today and told me some of the struggles inside her walls. My heart ached for her. I make it a practice to not know what…

Love is like a pineapple, Sweet and undefinable. Piet Hein Pineapples might be the happiest fruit God ever made.  Unless, of course, you have spent a summer picking them.  If not,  your memories associated with them are certainly nothing short of delightful.  Dole Whips at Disneyland, your last beach vacation, or just picking one up…

“There are no accidents with God.” That is the last thing my new friend Joy said to me when we parted ways this evening. We met on a flight to Virginia where we just happened to be sitting next to each other. Interestingly, I didn’t say a word to the sleeping lady on the earlier…

I wonder if the creator of the arcade knew the phenomenon they would cause. I wonder if they knew how many pockets and purses they would empty so that a desperate child could play one more round of skee-ball in an attempt to earn a measly 500 more tickets in order to buy the red…

David Butler, The Lord is My Strength, Multiply Goodness

Last weekend I heard a very simple prayer that I will not forget. The funny thing is, it was a mistake that made it memorable. As the gentleman prayed, he intended on petitioning God to strengthen our faith. Instead, he asked the Lord to please “Faithen our strength.” He quickly corrected his blunder over my…

These last few days my Instagram feed has been filled with pictures of pumpkins. It is that time of year I suppose. Tonight we caught up with the rest of the world, and the knives and candles came out at our house. The barstools are empty now—and beds are filled—the front porch has more personality,…

When I imagine the widow walking through the temple, I see her with her head slightly bowed. It is not heavy with shame, but rather meekly fixed on her destination. Her hand reverently drops the coins into the treasury–the muted sound barely bouncing off the stone walls. “And he called unto him his disciples, and…

Today I heard a boy retell the story of the ten lepers from the New Testament. You remember the story. Ten men, who were lepers, were gathered together in a village where Jesus was. They were some way off – forbidden by law to approach anyone clean. They shouted from a distance, “Jesus, Master, have…

Somewhere in the wild places near Jerusalem, a touching scene played out a few thousand years ago. The Savior of all the world came and sought baptism from John–a preacher prophet in the Judean area. The Baptist was given a special responsibility for his days on earth–a voice crying in the wilderness. His battle cry:…
